Aether Cowl

Aether is the material once believed to fill the sky above the terrestrial sphere, a fifth element through which light travels. Starlight was the inspiration for this geometric lace pattern, with mesh triangles forming a mosaic of starbursts on a background of garter stitch.

The Aether Cowl is a one-skein project in fingering-weight yarn, worked flat and then grafted into a loop.

Skills & Techniques:

Materials Needed:

  • 1 skein of Skein Top Draw Sock (85% superwash merino, 15% nylon; 437yds/400m per 100g skein), or 380yds/347m of fingering-weight yarn

  • US 6 / 4mm straight or circular needles (or needle size that gives you the right gauge)

  • A needle for grafting and weaving in the ends

  • Blocking pins and wires (optional but recommended)

Finished Measurements:

  • 37”/94cm circumference, and 13”/33cm depth, relaxed after blocking

  • The cowl can be enlarged by adding repeats (with additional yarn).
